A cat will typically sleep for 12 to 16 hours a day.

Typically, a cat spends about one-third of their lifespans sleeping. This is because most cats spend the majority of their energy hunting for prey and scavenging for food in the streets and wildlife.

Sleeping allows cats to conserve their energy between their meals and keeps them from becoming too exhausted after a hunt. Cats are also able to sleep well in the dark and require minimal light to see their surroundings.

In terms of the head to eye size ratio, cats have the biggest eyes than any other mammal.

The eyes of a cat make up half of its head size, which is the largest size relative to head size among any other mammal. A cat’s eyes also allow these creatures great night vision which helps them hunt for prey at night.

Additionally, this also means that the eyes of a cat are sensitive to light. With their heightened senses, cats can see roughly ⅙ of the minimum amount of light a human can perceive.

All cats are considered to be great swimmers.

According to research done by experts, all cats have the potential to enjoy a nice swim in the water. However, their fondness of water will depend on how early they are exposed to experiences like swimming and playing in puddles.

Some specific cat breeds also enjoy water more, such as the Bengal Cats and the Turkish Vans. These cats are also considered to be great swimmers and typically swim around during the warmer months of the year.

Cats are the only felines that meow.

If you’ve ever wondered why lions and other big cats don’t meow, this is one of the cat facts you can’t miss: Only domestic cats meow because they evolved with these vocal communication signals to talk to humans. Typically, cats only communicate with gestures and other sounds.

The only time when a cat will meow to another is when kittens call to their mother for food or milk. Some research has also shown that cats can understand what their owners tell them, capable of understanding vocal signals as well.

Many cats can communicate using their tails.

Several experts state that apart from purring, hissing, and other gestures, cats can also communicate with others using their tails. Similar to how a dog shows its mood with its tail, the position of a cat’s tail can signal many different things.

When a cat sticks its tail straight up and fluffs up its hair, it indicates that it feels threatened or scared. Meanwhile, a cat sitting down with its tail is curled in front of them that they are being attentive.

Cats have an average lifespan that can last between 2 to 16 years.

On average, the domestic cat lives around 15.5 years when taken care of properly. However, some cats can live as long as 20 years old. In fact, a cat named Cream Puff holds the record for the oldest cat alive, living up to 38 years old.

Statistics show that cats typically live longer when they remain indoors.

Domestic cats have a higher average lifespan, since they don’t need to hunt for their prey and come into conflict with other animals. Domestic cats are also given regular checkups that monitor their health, which allows them to receive treatment immediately.

Cats consider direct eye contact as threatening.

While you may find it adorable when cats stare at you, cats actually engage in direct eye contact as a display of assertiveness. According to experts, direct eye contact often makes cats feel uneasy and nervous.

Additionally, cats also stare each other down as a means of intimidating the other to resolve their conflicts. Eye contact with cats is also another way for them to signal that they are trying to establish dominance with the person or animal they are staring at.

A straight, vibrating tail indicates a happy cat.

Cats that approach you with this signal indicates that they are in a friendly mood and are feeling happy regarding an encounter. Purring is also a sign that your cat is showing you affection, as this sound is only made for communicating with humans.

Cats can starve to death if they don't like their food.

Cats are known to be picky with their foods, most especially when they are still young kittens. To a cat, the taste of their food is important as it can alter their appetites greatly.

When hunting for food, cats typically look for different types of prey to prevent repeating the same meals over and over again to suit their taste buds. Additionally, domestic cats will also refuse the same food served to them and will not eat until a new taste hits their taste buds.

Cats show friendship by draping their tails over another animal or person.

While they may not be as enthusiastic as dogs, felines have several ways to display friendship and affection. Among these little gestures is when a cat drapes their tails around you, another animal, or an object.

Similar to how people drape their arms over someone else, cats display this behavior to show a sign of closeness and friendship. To cats, this act can also indicate a symbol of protection and care for whatever its tail is draped around on.

Cats often hide in laundry baskets because they smell like their owner.

Many cat owners have experienced their feline companions cuddling up in their laundry whether or not it’s clean or fresh from the dryer. This is mainly due to their keen sense of smell which attracts them to anything that smells like their owners or companions.

When a certain scent they like is attached to an object, these felines will grow attached to it simply due to its smell being similar to yours. This can also explain as to why cats also enjoy sitting on your other belongings such as your laptop and beds.

A cat's tongue is as rough as sandpaper.

All cats have hard, backward-facing spines on their tongues called the filiform papillae. These spines on their tongues act as a comb for them when they groom themselves or others.

Additionally, cats also use these spines on their tongues to scrape the meat from their prey and the bones of other animals. Cats also use their tongues to scoop up their water to their mouths when drinking. How’s that for cool cat facts?

It is believed that spaying or neutering a cat can extend its lifespan.

Many studies have suggested that spayed or neutered cats live longer. Neutering your cat can lower the risks of cancer development as well as the development of other malignant tumors. Spraying your cat also decreases the risk of contracting certain infections such as pyometra and reduces the amount of stress on a female body when in heat.

Cats show their trust by exposing their bellies to you.

When a cat lies down on its back and exposes its belly to a person, this means that it trusts you. To cats, their stomach is considered a vulnerable spot as it is where most of its vital organs can be located and are typically guarded in many other situations.

A cat is only likely to expose its belly to you when it has become familiar with you. At times, a cat exposing its belly to a person can also indicate that it is asking for its belly to be rubbed.

The genome of an average house cat is 95.6% tiger.

Based on their evolutionary tree that dates back to over 10.8 million years ago, the modern tiger and the modern house cat are related to each other. Some of these genes also determine why different cat species grow as big as they do when reaching adulthood. However, some studies also show that the domestic house cat shares similar traits to lions.

Some cats have been found to love the smell of chlorine.

Scientists have found that the reason behind this is due to the smell of chlorine having similar components as cat urine. Much like catnip, studies have also shown that chlorine can have a psychedelic effect on some cats as well.

Cat breeders are referred to as Catteries.

These people often keep cats in commercially-housed environments called a cattery for boarding and breeding cats. In some countries like the United States, these catteries are referred to as a boarding kennel or a breeding kennel.

In 1903, the United States established the first cattery with a list of standards that must be met to be verified. This became one of the main ways cat breeders earned for a living and sold cats to several people after breeding them.

Cats are nearsighted.

Due to the size and shape of their eyes, cats have limited vision in close ranges. This means that cats can’t focus on objects that are less than a foot away from their line of sight. To compensate for this, their whiskers help the cat sense what they cannot see with their eyes.

Cats walk similarly to giraffes and camels.

Much like camels and giraffes, cats typically take their first step with both of their right feet first followed by both of their left feet. These animals are also the only known creatures in the animal kingdom to walk in such a manner.

When walking like this, the cat only moves half of its body forward at a time. Additionally, its relative, the tiger has also been observed to walk in the same manner.

Keeping your cat active during the day can help them sleep better at night.

When a cat keeps active during the day, it allows them to burn the extra energy they have left, which allows them to rest better during the night. Feeding your cat a substantial evening meal can also help improve their sleeping patterns during the night, which helps them get better rest.

Adult cats also snooze in 3 different ways. The first is a brief nap which can occur during any time of the day, the second is a longer light sleep, and last is their deep sleep which allows them to fully rest up.

Kittens can be spayed or neutered as early as eight weeks old.

For kittens, it is generally considered to be safe to be neutered when they reach 8 weeks old. In many animal shelters, this operation is also performed on most kittens of this age so that they may be sterilized before its adoption.

Depending on the age and the gender of the cat, neutering them can take anywhere between 15 to 90 minutes for the procedure to be completed. After the operation, the cats are recommended to stay indoors and isolated from other animals until it has fully recovered.

Cats can also show you they trust you by blinking slowly.

In the world of cats, closing your eyes in the presence of another person or animal is a sign of trust. This is also their way of communicating their affection towards you without coming near you or touching you physically.

When humans slowly blink their eyes at their cats, these felines take this as a sign that you mean no harm to them and at the same time are acknowledging their presence. On average, cats typically need a few days or weeks before they can grow acquainted with another person or animal.

These creatures can have up to 100 different types of vocalizations.

Unlike dogs, cats have ten times more vocalizations that they use to communicate with cats and other species of animals. In literature, around 21 different types of cat vocalizations have been identified which are also considered to be the most common sounds that the average cat makes.

Depending on the breed or the species of the cat, their vocalizations may also vary in its meaning and significance. Additionally, one vocal action such as a hiss or a growl can also vary in meaning depending on the tone that the cat uses.

Cats are considered to be the single mammal on the planet that cannot sense sweet tastes.

Due to a special mutation in their genes, the receptors on a cat’s tongue cannot taste sweetness. Sugar also does not blend well with their carnivorous diets, hence why cats do not eat sweet food at all.

Typically, cats also avoid food that leave a bitter taste in their mouths, as they also contain toxins in them.

They also mark humans as their territory or property.

Cats are considered to be very territorial creatures and will often protect their desired areas by attacking and warning others to stay away. These felines also mark their territory quite often by urinating on the area and spraying their hormones everywhere.

Additionally, they also commonly mark their territories by scratching and rubbing themselves against the area or object of desire. Cats mark their owners as their territory by rubbing their heads on them and head-butting their owners to allow their scent to stay on them.

Cats have been found to dream just like humans do when they sleep.

Many studies have shown that all mammals can dream, as shown by the similar brain activity found in humans and other mammals when sleeping. Because of this, some cats can also experience having nightmares. When this happens, cats should be woken up gently to prevent their fear from further intensifying.

Kittens and some adult cats may also cry during their sleep and often jerk or move their heads, legs, torso, or necks while dreaming.

When a female cat is in heat, she releases multiple eggs at once over a few days.

This means that when the female cat gives birth, the litter of kittens can have more than one father as the eggs typically remain fertile for several days when in heat. During this time, cats can also show more aggressive behaviors and are more prone to escape attempts to find another cat to mate with.

Female cats will typically stay in heat until they become pregnant or until the mating season ends where they will try again another season later. A female cat can mate with multiple partners when in heat, with this cycle will typically lasting a week or two.

The collarbone of a cat does not connect to the rest of the bones on its body.

The forelimbs of the cat are attached to the shoulder by a free-floating clavicle bone found in their bodies. This allows these felines to pass their bodies through small spaces where their heads can also fit through.

This unique bone structure is also considered to be an advantage towards cats as this allows them to easily escape larger predators and also aids them while hunting for their prey. To cats, this ability is one of their most essential survival abilities.

Cats tend to be picky with their drinking water.

Scientists have observed that cats will often be fussy when it comes to their water bowls or water source. Some felines will prefer to ignore the bowl overall and would rather drink from other sources such as the sink or the toilet.

To cats, toilet water often tastes fresh to them compared to their water bowls that have been sitting in a corner for a whole day.

The nose print of a cat is unique to itself much like the fingerprint of a human being.

Each cat has a unique print on its nose that can’t be found anywhere else. These prints can typically be seen through a magnifying glass that displays the bumps, ridges, and patterns on the nose of any cat.

Scientists have confirmed that no two prints of the nose of a cat are identical. Much like the fingerprints of people, these cat nose prints can be used to identify a cat and track them when they are lost.

The average cat can jump up to six times their length.

Cats have incredibly strong muscles and fast reflexes that allow them to move with grace and great agility. In a single bound, the average cat can jump over a height of five to eight feet using its back leg muscles.

These muscles can be developed even from a young age when the cat is still a kitten by encouraging it to jump around lengths with toys.

Cats can drink seawater to survive extreme situations.

Cats can drink seawater safely thanks to a special function their kidneys have that can filter out the salt in the water they drink. This allows them to stay hydrated on saltwater without experiencing any issues with their kidneys or other organs.

However, some experts do not recommend purposely giving cats saltwater as their bodies can also begin to reject the substance over time. Now that’s one for admirable cat facts.

Cats often perceive slow-moving objects as stagnant.

The eyes of a cat have the ability to notice the fast movements made by their prey which allows them to quickly react to their movements to gain an advantage in the hunt. However, for creatures that move slower than normal such as a snail or a worm, or any other slow-moving object, cats see these things to be stagnant.

Scientists have also tested and proven this by using an experiment called the critical flicker fusion which tests the visual system of other creatures such as animals and insects.

Grapes and raisins are considered to be dangerous foods to cats.

According to research, feeding cat food with seeds in them could cause kidney failures in their systems due to the toxic substances found in these foods. If your cat does come into contact with these foods and consumes them, it is best to immediately contact a veterinary expert for immediate medical care.

Other daily items that humans use such as toothpaste are also considered to be toxic for the body of a cat and should be kept away and hidden from them.

The grooming process of a cat allows the stimulation of blood flow to its skin.

This common process also allows a cat to regulate its body temperature, which can also help them relax better in the process. While cats can also be groomed by their owners with a brush, cats are naturally built to groom themselves regardless.

For cats, there is more to grooming than just being able to clean themselves of dirt from their fur. Grooming also allows cats to prevent infections, eliminates parasites found around its body, and as well as help them relax when they feel nervous or in conflict with something.

Cats have an additional special organ that allows them to taste scents in the air.

Located on the roof of the cat’s mouth, this special cat organ is called the Jacobson’s organ or the Vomeronasal organ. This organ contains special ducts that connect the mouth and the nose which allows a cat to analyze the scents that it breathes in.

This organ also contains several receptor cells that also connect to the cat’s part of the brain that is associated with feeding, socializing, and sexual behaviors.

Some cats may yawn as a way of ending confrontation with another animal.

Many experts state that in the language of cats, this motion is comparable to a human making the “talk to the hand” gesture to another person. At times, a cat yawning can also mean a sign of surrender or a signal that they wish for the conflict to end immediately to prevent stress.

Some cats have also been observed to yawn to try and calm themselves down to put themselves at ease. Other research has also stated that yawning helps boost a cat’s brain functions by sending more oxygen to the brain.

Cats will wag their tails as a sign to indicate when they are angry or irritated.

Unlike dogs, a cat wagging its tail is far from a happy expression or signal. In the language of cats, wagging around their tails or flicking them in bursts of energy is their way of expressing their annoyance or anger.

Some cats can show these signs if they do not want to be touched by anyone else or if something they wanted was taken away from them. At other times, a cat can also wag its tail around when hunting their prey to distract them for a short period.

All claws of a cat will curve downward naturally.

Contrary to popular belief, the claws of a cat are not the same as the fingernails of a human being. Instead, the claws of a cat are considered to be special tools that they use to catch and hold their prey, tear apart meat, and climb objects.

Their claws will always curve downwards and also do not completely retract inside their paws. Cats retract their claws through a tendon in their paws that can extend and retract them at will.

Cats are silent when they walk thanks to their padded paws.

Often associated with sneakiness, cats can walk around silently due to their padded paws which allows them to remain unheard while they hunt for their prey.

Cats can also walk on their tiptoes and carefully place their footing when doing so to minimize noise.

The male cat is more likely to be left-pawed than the female cat.

In the word of cats, there is a 36% chance that a cat will be born left-pawed while 25% will be ambidextrous and the remaining will be right-pawed. This means that unlike humans, a cat is born with equal chances of being left or right paw dominant.

Many scientists have also observed that a male cat will have more preference for their left side than female cats. The dominant paw can be found by observing the movement of the cat over some time and which legs they more commonly move first when moving around their environment.

Some cats tend to attack others when they are bored and have nothing to do.

When a cat is not given efficient stimulation, they can turn towards more aggressive behaviors for no reason other than killing their boredom. Cats will also tend to play with their food or prey when they are not hungry just to entertain themselves for some amount of time.

More often, domestic cats will attack the ankles of their owners to entertain themselves.

The purr of a cat typically vibrates at a rate of 25 to 150 hertz

Cats can purr while inhaling and exhaling air, maintaining a constant pattern and frequency while doing so. This often gives the impression or the feeling that cats are vibrating when they continuously purr.

Some studies have shown that when a cat purrs at certain frequencies, it can promote and improve bone density in its body. To some extent, this could also promote the cat’s healing when it is injured. How’s that for fascinating cat facts?

Some cats will purr to soothe themselves when they feel stressed or are ill.

Many other studies have also suggested that purring is a way for cats to stimulate their muscles and bones while exerting the least amount of energy when resting. As a result, purring can also help improve their mood and relax them, similar to the effect when humans attempt to meditate.

Additionally, cats also tend to purr to show that they are in a good mood or are currently expressing happy emotions.

A group of kittens is referred to as a kindle.

Additionally, a group of kittens may also be called by the collective noun ‘litter’ which specifically refers to many kittens. These kittens may be referred to as such until they grow into full adults, which is referred to as a clowder in groups.

Kittens typically reach puberty around the time grow to 6 months of age. After its first birthday, a kitten will officially be referred to as an adult cat.

Cats also have whiskers located on the back of their front legs.

These whiskers are smaller than the ones found on their face and typically indicate information on the position of their prey when they are caught. These whiskers can also help a cat when they are climbing objects as it helps them indicate where their paws are placed.

As the cat ages, their whiskers may also darken in color or fall out. However, a cat’s whiskers can grow back over time.

Each cat will have a special vocabulary with their owners.

Typically, cats will communicate with one another using body language. However, when they interact with humans, they tend to develop their vocabulary to interact with them.

Some cats will also develop special behaviors or habits to familiarize themselves with their owners and new surroundings.

Catnip is said to give cats the same effect as LSD does to humans.

Catnip is commonly known as a perennial herb that causes happy receptors in a cat’s brain to respond. The majority of cats will have a psychoactive reaction towards catnip which causes them to roll, flip, and rub around the area where the catnip is located until they grow tired and zone out.

Some cats may also meow or even growl as a response to the smell of the catnip which can cause them to become more hyperactive and aggressive in behavior.

Scientists state that cats see people like bigger and hairless cats.

Experts state that this is why cats treat people no differently than they do other cats. Many other domestic cats also show the same behavior to their owners that they show their biological mothers.

Other research has also shown that cats see human beings as a clumsier and bigger version of their species due to humans tripping more often and dropping objects.

Cats often use their tails for balance when jumping or balancing on narrow paths.

The tail of a cat helps them balance when walking along narrow pathways like shelves or fences and chasing after its prey.

Some cats also use their tails to relieve stress by biting them, while some may also attempt self-mutilation when extremely anxious.

These creatures are considered to be very meticulous about their bathroom spots.

Cats have been observed to meticulously bury their poop as a result of their instincts. Many research suggests that the reason behind this is due to their habit of marking their territories without the intention of intimidating bigger and stronger species.

This also implies that when a domestic cat buries its feces, it states that it sees its owner as the dominant creature among the two of you. If a cat purposely chooses not to use a litter box when one is present, it means that the cat sees itself as the more dominant creature over its owner.

When in a confrontation, the hissing cat is considered to be the one at a disadvantage.

This behavior is done to induce fear into its opponent to mask its disadvantage against the other. One cat will often hiss at another when engaged in territorial aggression or when it feels threatened by another person or creature.

At times, a cat may also hiss to warn another creature not to approach or bother them.

Cats can also be toilet trained.

Experts have stated that it takes a relatively shorter amount of time to toilet train a cat compared to the time it takes to toilet train a human child. Any cat can be toilet trained as early as three months old until they turn into an adult.

Toilets training is a much simpler process in teaching a cat than a human child due to the cat’s natural instinct to keep itself clean.

Cats typically learn the same way as a 2 to a 3-year-old child would.

Cats can learn new tricks at any age given that they can find their way of learning the task. Many cat owners typically train their house cats simple behavioral tricks  that allow them to bond and adjust to their human companions.

When learning a new trick or behavioral function, cats have to be shown something in particular in repetition for them to become familiarized with the sequence. Over time, this becomes a new habit for the cat, and will learn to eventually execute tasks on its own.

Cats use their whiskers as a sensory tool.

These whiskers can also be referred to as vibrissae, which allow a cat to ‘see’ around its surroundings even in the dark. Cats often brush their whiskers against objects to know its precise locations, size, and texture.

When cutting these sensory tools, a cat will become more disoriented and find difficulty in moving around its environment until the whiskers grow back. However, cutting the whiskers of a cat does not hurt them as there are no nerves found in them.

Apart from themselves and other cats, these creatures also occasionally groom people.

Oftentimes, a cat can be seen grooming itself or its kittens several times a day. On occasion, some cat owners may also experience being groomed by their cats by receiving licks.

Research suggests that when a cat licks you, it is attempting to teach you how to groom yourself much similar to how its mother would lick them as a kitten. A cat may also lick its owner when they sense that they are stressed or sad as a sign of affection.

A cat sticking out its butt to you is a sign of friendship.

In the world of cats, tail sniffing is considered a normal and common behavior among their kind. Cats often communicate with other cats by doing so and can also show their behinds to their owners to signal a sign of friendship.

Some experts also believe that this is also a cat’s way of showing that they are aroused when in heat.

The first known cat video to be recorded was from July 1894.

Filmed by none other than Thomas Edison, this footage was titled ‘The Boxing Cats’. Today, the anniversary of this video is now celebrated as National Cat Day and is often a time where people share the most cat videos around on the internet.

The said video can also be viewed on Youtube today, showing two cats having a boxing match with tiny gloves. The match also appears to be monitored by a human referee.

Cats do not enjoy eating the same food every day.

Much like humans do, cats typically get bored with their meals if they become repetitive and bland. Many cat owners are also advised by veterinarians that their meals should be changed around from time to time to prevent food allergies from developing.

Doing so will also improve their health better and give them an overall balanced and better diet. Some cats will also not touch their food at all if they do not find it pleasing to their tastes.

Some cats are ambidextrous.

The first study for researching ambidextrous cats was done in 1991 at the Ataturk University located in Turkey. This study showed that around 50% of cats were right paw dominant, while the other 40% were left paw dominant. That said, the remaining 10% consisted of rare ambidextrous cats.

Cats indicate playtime with humans by hitting them when their claws are retracted.

When a cat is feeling playful or joyous, they will often retract their claws to play with their owners to avoid scratching or hurting them. Cats may also exhibit the same behavior when playing with their kittens or other cats of its age.

When cats also want attention, they may also reach out to their paw and touch their owners to communicate with them. Additionally, when their claws are out, cats will also often scratch surfaces they see when their owners are around as a means of establishing their dominance and territory.

Around 33 different species have gone extinct because of cats.

Many domestic and stray cats are responsible for the extinction of nearly 33 different wildlife species due to their hunting habits. Most of these species include small animals such as birds, rodents, and other small mammals.

According to statistics in 2013, around 1.4 to 3.7 billion birds have been killed all around the world due to cats hunting them for sources of food. Additionally, around 6.9 mammals around the world are also killed by cats on average.

Around 80% of the total cat population responds to catnip.

The remaining few do not show any kind of reaction towards catnip because they were not born with the ‘catnip’ gene that allows their brain to identify it. While the most common effect of catnip on cats is a generally elevated mood and happiness, some cats may also experience the opposite effect.

Cats under the age of three months old are also not affected by catnip. The earliest a kitten can develop or experience any effects towards catnip is when they reach the age of six months old. Generally, catnip is often considered to be safe for cats as its effects on them wear down eventually over time.

Cats have been proven to be smarter than dogs.

Compared to dogs, cats have double the amount of neurons in their cerebral cortex.

Kneading is considered to be a sign of happiness among cats.

This feline behavior indicates that your cat is being playful and is expressing emotions such as happiness and contentment. Kneading is considered to be an instinctive and common skill among domestic cats that are picked up from the time that they are still kittens.

To many other cats, the act of kneading also provides them with a motion that comforts them similarly to how they were comforted by their mothers. When a cat kneads on its owner, it can also mean that they are marking their territory by leaving the scent from their paws on your skin

White cats with blue eyes are prone to being deaf.

Many experts have found that around 17 to 22 percent of white and blue-eyed cats are born deaf. This mostly occurs with domestic cats and their condition is due to a common hereditary trait that all-white cats share.

However, some white cats with blue eyes can also experience just being deaf in one ear. Their deafness is commonly caused by a degeneration of the auditory apparatus within the inner ear.

Around 200 feral cats can be found around Disneyland parks.

For several years, stray cats have roamed around the property of Disney parks all over the world. According to Disneyland, they do not shoo away these cats as they help keep pests out of the park properties.

Additionally, they also commonly stay hidden during the day when there is the most number of visitors, thus not causing any trouble for park maintenance or its visitors. In certain parks, more cats are released during the night to keep rodent populations low.

Male cats that have been neutered can consume fewer calories to maintain their weight.

If no dietary measures are made after the procedure, owners who have their male cats neutered can experience better weight maintenance with less food. On average, male cats will maintain a weight of around 4 to 5 kg while eating less than 200 kcal a day.

Additionally, your cat’s appetite may also change for the following weeks after the process.

Many cats are considered to be crepuscular.

Crepuscular cats are more active during dusk and dawn, which explains why they are asleep for most of their time during the middle of the day. These cats also tend to follow a specific rhythm of activity from day to day if they are domesticated.

This behavior can also be linked to a cat’s wild ancestry which was believed to observe nocturnal behaviors. However, this behavior may also be changed by training the cat to adapt to new sleeping and activity patterns.

Cats will push their whiskers forward when they are hunting.

A cat’s whiskers also act as a special sensory tool that allows them to determine and familiarize themselves with their surroundings much like the antenna of insects. When a cat is frightened or feels threatened, a cat will move its whiskers backward and may look smaller than they usually do.

Apart from its tail and its body language, a cat may also express its mood by its whiskers. Now there’s one for interesting cat facts.

Like many other mammals, cats also mate with their children and siblings.

Unlike humans, cats do not have a moral rule against incestual relationships. However, cat breeders typically control the interactions that cats have with one another to prevent any unwanted looking kittens when two adult cats mate with each other.

This type of mating is referred to as inbreeding and is common among many other animals in the world. This process also allows kittens to be born with more uniform appearances.

Some cats typically spend one-third of their time awake grooming themselves.

Many cats will typically spend the majority of the time they spend awake grooming themselves. Not only does this clean their fur, but it also cools them down and regulates their body temperature. When a cat is injured, it will also lick its wounds clean by instinct.

Some cats also groom others as a means of social activity and bonding, much like monkeys.

Cats often dislike scents like citrus and anything similar to it.

Like many other animals, cats have a strong sense of smell, with their noses sensitive to strong smells. Typically, most cats will not enjoy the scent of citrus and mint as they contain substances that are considered toxic to them.

Many cats are also sensitive to the smell of certain cleaning agents such as detergents and kitchen sprays. Additionally, some cats also do not like the smell of their litter box after it has been used for some time.

According to research, the hissing of a cat is considered to be defensive and not aggressive.

Typically, the hiss of a cat can serve as a warning to other creatures or people to not get any closer to them. Hissing is a cat’s natural way of warning others and communicating their territorial nature.

Male cats are considered to be more sensitive to catnip compared to kittens and female cats.

Male cats are more commonly aggressive and more prone to the effects of catnip. They are also more likely to spend more time around catnip due to the effect it has on them, which can cause mild addiction.

However, if they are neutered cats are more likely to not experience the side effects of catnip.

A female cat is capable of giving birth as early as 4 months old.

As early as 4 months old, a female kitten can reach sexual maturity and go in heat. When giving birth, a cat can take as long as 30 minutes at a time for one kitten to be born.

Once born, the mother will lick them clean to stimulate breathing in her kittens. Some births can take as long as one hour or as quick as 10 minutes per kitten born.

Cats indicate when they want to play by shaping their tails like a question mark.

This curved tail shape indicates their playful mood and is considered a friendly gesture to other animals or their owners. Definitely one of the cat facts you have to watch out for to keep your pets happy.

Domestic cats prefer to sleep on surfaces that smell like their owners.

Over time, cats grow accustomed to the scent of their owners and find comfort in their smell. This is why domestic cats can often be found sleeping in places such as laundry baskets, shoes, and around their owner’s sleeping chambers.

Some cats may also try to attach their scents to these surfaces as well as a means of establishing their dominance against their owners. This can also be considered as a form of territorial marking.

Male cats often have the strangest ways of appealing to the female of their species.

During mating seasons, some males and cats may exhibit unusual behavior to attract a female mate in heat. The most common behavior is peeing in several locations to sexually attract a female with the use of its pheromones.

Some male cats may also bite their female partner while mating as a way to show their dominance as an alpha. Lastly, many other male cats may also immobilize the female while attempting to mate with her.
