Disney Princes

Disney fans everywhere want nothing more than to meet their own Disney Prince. Perhaps some even want to become a Disney Prince themselves. Either way, the best way to achieve both is to figure out what a Disney Prince is actually like. From Prince Charming to Mickey Mouse, here’s a list of Disney royalty and everything about them!

What is a Disney Prince?

A Disney Prince is a male character in a Disney film who marries a princess. Based on this definition alone, there will be plenty of Disney characters to come to mind. However, some fans like to differentiate the “official” Disney Princes from the “unofficial” ones.

An official Disney Prince refers to the male love interest of a princess from the Disney Princess franchise. The Disney Princess franchise is a line-up of famous heroines from Disney’s animated feature films.

There are only 12 Disney Princesses, with each having their love interest except for Merida and Moana. This means there are 10 official Disney Princes. He can be a prince by blood or by marriage, so long as he ends up with one of the official Disney Princesses, such as Cinderella and Snow White.

As for “unofficial” Disney Princes, these are male characters from Disney films who aren’t related to any of the princesses from the franchise. Some have royal titles, while some are heroes with prince-like qualities. They are usually from less successful Disney films, but fans love them either nonetheless.

Whether he is official or unofficial, a Disney Prince must embody the qualities of a princess’s ideal partner. He must be kind, generous, and sincere.

Who Are the Official Disney Princes?

Prince Florian

First Appearance: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Other Disney Movies: N/A

As Snow White’s prince, Prince Florian is the very first official Disney Prince. He is a lean young man with brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a blue vest and a red cape over white long sleeves.

Like Snow White, Prince Florian is an amazing singer. He sings the song “One Song”, which made Snow White fall in love with him.

The film doesn’t mention his name, so audiences initially only referred to him as the “Prince”. Some believe his name is Prince Ferdinand, but a TV spot by Disney France officially referred to him as Prince Florian. This has been his official name since then.

Audiences also wondered how old Snow White’s prince was as some theories claimed he was around 30 years old. Disney, later on, confirmed that Prince Florian was only 18 years old.

Prince Charming

First Appearance: Cinderella (1950)
Other Disney Movies: Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002) and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007)

Prince Charming is another popular Disney Prince. Prince Charming, or Prince Henry, is Cinderella’s partner. He is handsome, young, lean, and entrancing with his dark brown hair and fair skin. Most of the young ladies in their kingdom want to be his wife, but Prince Charming doesn’t show any desire to marry at all.

Of course, this changes when he sees Cinderella at the ball. They dance together, and he becomes smitten before the night ends. Overcome with love, he orders his guards to find Cinderella using the glass slipper she left behind.

Like most Disney Princes, Charming also sings a song in the movie. As they are dancing together, Charming and Cinderella sing “So This is Love”.

Prince Phillip

First Appearance: Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Other Disney Movies: Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams (2007)

For fans wondering which Disney movie featured a prince named Phillip, the answer is Sleeping Beauty. Prince Phillip is Princess Aurora’s love interest.

Unlike the first two Disney Princes, Prince Phillip knew Aurora early on. He was at Aurora’s christening because their fathers, both kings from neighboring kingdoms, were friends. They decided Phillip and Aurora would wed when they were old enough.

Another thing that sets Prince Phillip apart from the first two Disney Princes is his role in Aurora’s story. He has a much more prominent role as he goes through several of Maleficent’s traps to save Aurora.

At the end of the film, Prince Phillip gives Aurora the “true love’s kiss”, which is a popular trope in fairytales.

Prince Eric

First Appearance: The Little Mermaid (1989)
Other Disney Movies: The Little Mermaid II: Return to Sea (2000)

Ariel and Prince Eric, Disney Prince

In The Little Mermaid (1989), Prince Eric is Ariel’s official Disney Prince. He is a young bachelor who voyages the sea with his own ship and crew. He has a lean body and is known for his black hair and dazzling blue eyes.

During a strong thunderstorm, Eric’s ship explodes and the young prince falls into the sea. Ariel finds him unconscious in the waves, and she saves him by dragging him back to shore. Like most Disney Princes, Eric falls in love with Ariel’s enchanting singing voice.

Prince Eric is the first and only Disney Prince to become a father. In The Little Mermaid II: Return to Sea (2000), Eric and Ariel have a young daughter named Melody.

Prince Adam

First Appearance: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Other Disney Movies: Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997) and Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World (1998)

Prince Adam is the fifth official Disney Prince. He is better known as the Beast, which is the first form both Belle and the audience meet. As the Beast, he is a large and terrifying monster. He has sharp teeth, dark horns, and brown fur. As a human, Adam is a handsome young man with long auburn hair.

Because of Adam’s selfishness, a witch cursed him and turned him into a beast. The only way to turn back the spell was to fall in love before the last petal from his magical rose fell. Otherwise, he would stay a beast forever.

Despite his poor attitude, Belle approached him with gentleness. He is moved by her kind heart and gradually falls in love with her. After almost dying at the hands of Belle’s other suitor, the two reunite, and Belle finally breaks the curse by professing her love for the Beast.

Aladdin

First Appearance: Aladdin (1992)
Other Disney Movies: The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996)

Jasmine and Aladdin, Disney Prince

The sixth official Disney Prince is Aladdin. He is a young man with black hair. Growing up on the streets of Arabia, Aladdin has a slim build and fast reflexes.

As the thief Aladdin, he only wears a purple vest, old ratty pants, and a red fez. As Prince Ali Ababwa, Aladdin wears a white turban with matching royal clothes.

At the start of the film, Aladdin is nothing more than a thief. He has a pet monkey named Abu, and together, they live day to day stealing food. After meeting Genie, Aladdin uses one of his wishes to become a real prince, hoping to woo Princess Jasmine.

Aladdin is the only Disney Prince who is the star of his own film. He is also the first Disney Prince who isn’t royal by blood. He only became royal by his marriage to Princess Jasmine.

John Smith

First Appearance: Pocahontas (1995)
Other Disney Movies: Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)

John Smith is an English man with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Wearing a blue conquistador armor, he is the captain of a group of settlers who travel to Virginia. There, he meets his love interest and Disney Princess, Pocahontas.

In Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998), however, Pocahontas meets a new love interest. Believing John Smith to be dead, she falls in love with John Rolfe. When Pocahontas and John Smith reunite, the two eventually part ways after realizing they are too different to be together.

While they do not end up together, John Smith is still considered Pocahontas’ official Disney Prince. This is likely because John Smith is much more popular among fans than John Rolfe.

Captain Li Shang

First Appearance: Mulan (1998)
Other Disney Movies: Mulan II (2004)

The eighth official Disney Prince is Captain Li Shang. Li Shang is a captain in the Imperial Army and the son of a respected army general. He has black hair and a muscular build and is also very skilled in combat.

Unlike the other princes, Shang is not royal by blood or marriage. Mulan is not a princess, and the only official titles Shang held in the movies were captain and general. Despite this, there are many reasons they are both still in the line-up of the official Disney Princess franchise.

First, Mulan and Shang both embody the qualities of Disney Princesses and princes. Second, they are highly respected by the emperor and the people of China for defeating the Hun Army.

Lastly, fans love Mulan and Shang as much as they love other Disney couples. Shang is especially a fan favorite because of his iconic song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”.

Prince Naveen

First Appearance: The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Other Disney Movies: N/A

Naveen has several prince-like qualities. He is a handsome young man, with black hair, tan skin, and brown eyes. He is also a virtuoso who can sing and play the ukulele. While he isn’t particularly mean, he can be arrogant and lazy.

In the film, Naveen turns into a frog after a voodoo witch doctor tricks him. He accidentally turns Tiana into a frog as well, but they regain their human form after getting married.

Unlike most Disney couples, they do not become king and queen. Instead, Tiana opens a restaurant, and Naveen performs there as a live act. Even without a luxurious palace, they fulfill their dreams and live happily ever after.

Flynn Rider

First Appearance: Tangled (2010)
Other Disney Movies: Tangled: Ever After (2017)

The tenth and last official Disney Prince is Flynn Rider. Flynn Rider, whose real name is Eugene Fitzherbert, is the love interest of Rapunzel. He has a tall and lean physique, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Flynn Rider is especially popular among Disney fans for his wit and humor. To many, he is also the most handsome Disney Prince. In the film, Flynn is also aware of his good looks, and he even has a special move called the “smolder”, where he puckers his lips.

To Rapunzel, however, his good looks have no effect. She only falls in love with him after they get to know each other. Their popular duet, “I See the Light”, marks the beginning of their love as they realize their feelings for each other.

Who Are Some of the Unofficial Disney Princes?

Kristoff Bjorgman

First Appearance: Frozen (2013)
Other Disney Movies: Frozen II (2019)

Anna and Kristoff

One of the main characters from the Frozen franchise is Kristoff Bjorgman. He isn’t a prince by blood, but he is by marriage. He became the Prince Consort of Arendelle after marrying Princess Anna.

In Frozen (2013), he is introduced as a social recluse who prefers the company of his reindeer, Sven, and the trolls who raised him. After meeting Anna, however, he learns humans aren’t so bad. He accompanies Anna to save her sister, and they fall in love.

While Kristoff isn’t an official Disney Prince, many consider him within the same league. This is no surprise as he has several prince-like qualities. He is honest, kind, and sweet. Plus, he is also a talented singer, which is a common trait among Disney characters.

Unlike most princes, however, Kristoff doesn’t have a lean physique. Instead, he is quite bulky, with broad shoulders and a muscular torso.

Taran

First Appearance: The Black Cauldron (1985)
Other Disney Movies: N/A

Princess Eilonwy and Taran

Only true Disney fans know about The Black Cauldron’s Taran. Taran is a young farm boy who wants to join the war against the evil Horned King. His chance comes after finding out the Horned King is looking for his pet pig, Hen Wen.

Unfortunately, The Black Cauldron did not do well during its theatrical release. Because of this, Taran is not an official Disney Prince. However, Taran and the film garnered a cult following in the early 2000s.

To many fans, he is still a Disney prince since he has Princess Eilonwy as his love interest. Since they are still young, the film doesn’t focus too much on their romance. However, the two still develop feelings for each other and even share a kiss.

Hercules

First Appearance: Hercules (1997)
Other Disney Movies: Hercules: Zero to Hero (1999)

Megara and Hercules

Hercules is a character popular not just in mythology but in Disney too! He is the son of King Zeus and Queen Hera, who rule over Mount Olympus. In the film, he is also Zeus’ only heir.

When Hercules was just a baby, Hades abducted him and turned him into a mortal. This caused Hercules to grow up as a scrawny and awkward boy. He reaches his full potential after training with Phil, a satyr.

While he isn’t an official Disney Prince, fans hope he’ll join the line-up soon. Hercules no doubt possesses prince-like qualities, and he also has a love interest, Megara. She becomes a princess after they get married.

Quasimodo

First Appearance: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Other Disney Movies: The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002)

Quasimodo Hunchback of Notre Dame

More often than not, people only have one image of what a Disney prince looks like. He is tall, lean, and handsome. Quasimodo, however, is a Disney prince who challenges these stereotypes.

Quasimodo was born with several physical abnormalities. This changed his appearance and gave him a hunched back, a shorter stature, and a larger left eye. Townsmen misjudge him for his appearance, so he stays away from people. He lives alone in Notre Dame’s tallest tower.

Despite the judgment he faces, Quasimodo did not become cruel or resentful. Instead, he is gentle, curious, and friendly. To many fans, this is enough to prove that Quasimodo is a Disney Prince.

Milo Thatch

First Appearance: Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Other Disney Movies: Atlantis: Milo’s Return (2003)

Milo Thatch

Another unconventional Disney prince is Milo Thatch, a linguist and cartographer. Somewhat a fanatic, he dedicates his research to finding the lost city of Atlantis.

Milo is a gangly man with light brown hair and thick eyebrows. His clothes change throughout the film except for his large black spectacles. Despite looking far from the average Disney Prince, Milo is honest and kind. When his exploration team threatens the safety of Atlantis and its people, he protects them instead of completing his research.

Another thing that qualifies Milo to be a Disney Prince is his marriage to Kida, the princess of Atlantis. In Atlantis: Milo’s Return, he and Kida are the king and queen of Atlantis.

Simba

First Appearance: The Lion King (1994)
Other Disney Movies: The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998), The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata (2004), and The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar (2015)

Simba is the son of Mufasa and Sarabi, who ruled over the Pride Lands as king and queen. His uncle, Scar, tricked Simba into believing he caused Mufasa’s death. Simba runs away from his kingdom and lives in the jungle, where Timon and Pumbaa raise him.

The Lion King was a box office success. It is the highest-grossing traditionally animated film in history, and it is also the second-highest-grossing animated film. Despite the film’s success, Simba is not an official Disney Prince. He is most likely not a part of the line-up because he is an animal.

Simba’s story is also based on Shakespeare’s plays Hamlet and Macbeth. Both stories also centered on royalty.

Kovu

First Appearance: The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998)
Other Disney Movies: N/A

Lion King Kovu

Simba isn’t the only Disney Prince from the Lion King franchise. Kovu is another one fans love. Kovu is a lion who looks like Simba’s evil uncle, Scar. He has auburn fur and a black mane. In The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, Kovu suffers a wound that is identical to Scar’s.

This resemblance, however, is coincidental. They aren’t actually related. His mother and brothers, however, are devotees of Scar. They hate Simba, and they try to use Kovu’s friendship with Simba’s daughter, Kiara, to their advantage.

However, Kovu does not have the same principles as his family. Despite his aggressive upbringing, Kovu isn’t violent. He is a good friend to Kiara. Later on, they even fall in love and become mates. His kind heart and love for Kiara make him qualified to be a Disney Prince.

Robert Philip

First Appearance: Enchanted (2007)
Other Disney Movies: N/A

A Disney Prince usually loves to sing. In fact, this is a running theme for most Disney characters. Robert Philip, however, doesn’t like singing. In the film, Enchanted (2007), he declines to sing alongside Princess Giselle when she invites him.

Robert Philip is a cynical divorce attorney who lives in New York City. After his ex-wife left him and his daughter, he no longer believed in love. However, Princess Giselle of Andalasia turns his life upside down.

Princess Giselle is a whimsical girl who believes in love and happily ever after. She dreams of marrying her own Prince Charming, but she ends up in the real world, specifically in New York. While Ralph isn’t exactly a Disney Prince, he certainly fits in with royalty. In the sequel, the official Disney Princesses rescue Ralph. They each use their unique powers and skills to save him from falling to his doom.

Jack Skellington

His royal adviser, Yzma, plots to kill him because of his personality. However, her sidekick, Kronk, accidentally gives him the wrong potion. Instead, Kuzco turns into a talking llama.

To reclaim his palace, Kuzco enlists the help of Pacha to escort him back. He learns about the hardships commoners like Pacha face. At the end of his journey, Kuzco becomes humble, patient, and kind like a Disney Prince.
