Beagles are not the first choice when it comes to air-scenting.

Beagles are much better at ground-scenting rather than they are at air-scenting. That is why Beagles have been excluded from mountain rescue teams in favor of the Collie breed (a dog breed a native of Scotland), which uses sight in addition to air-scenting.

Beagles can find its "target" in a half-hectare space within a minute.

Although they are not the first choice when it comes to air-scenting, they are the most reliable, and most developed sense of smell in contrast to any other dogs. Researchers study canine behavior during the 1950s and placed a mouse in a half-hectare field and observed how long it take for the dogs to find it. The beagles found the mouse less than a minute, while the other breeds took 15 minutes while the others did not even found the mouse.
