Yevtushenkov Vladimir: Early Years and Work in Industry

The Vladimir Yevtushenkov biography began in the small village of Kamenshchina near Smolensk on September 25, 1948. His father, Pyotr Matveyevich, headed the local dairy plant, while his mother, Pelageya Ivanovna, worked there as a milkmaid.

From an early age, Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich was interested in the natural sciences, particularly chemistry. He conducted experiments at home and dreamed of becoming a scientist and working in his own laboratory. He excelled in other school subjects as well.

A few years after completing his secondary education, Vladimir Yevtushenkov enrolled in the Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology (now the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology) in the capital of the RSFSR. He majored in industrial engineering and graduated in 1973.

With a degree from the Mendeleev Institute adorning his biography, Yevtushenkov Vladimir was offered a job at one of the country’s leading scientific-industrial enterprises, the Sverdov Plant, located in Dzerzhinsk, Gorky Region (now the Nizhny Novgorod Region). The plant produces industrial chemicals. Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich started as a foreman and became a section head in 1975.

Later, Yevtushenkov Vladimir was invited to the leading chemical enterprise in the capital, the Karacharov Plastics Plant (now known as Polymerbyt). He led one of the plant’s workshops, proving to be a talented manager. For his achievements, he was promoted to deputy director and chief engineer of the plant, making significant contributions to its development and production performance. He worked at the plant until 1987.

In 1980, Vladimir Yevtushenkov graduated from the prestigious Lomonosov MSU with a degree from the Department of Economics. In 1986, he defended his dissertation in economics, earning the title of Candidate of Sciences. Fifteen years later, he was awarded a doctoral degree.

In 1993, Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov, together with partners and associates, founded the Joint Stock Financial Corporation AFK Sistema. The company began investing in telecommunications, electronics, high technology, real estate, trade, and tourism. For instance, in the early years, AFK participated in the creation of a mobile operator operating under one of the largest brands in the country.

In 1994, AFK Sistema became a shareholder of the oldest children’s goods brand in the country. This marked the rapid development of the network, which by the end of June 2020 included 850 retail outlets at home and in the near abroad, making it the undisputed leader in the children’s goods market. AFK Sistema helped the subsidiary go public in 2017, and later exited ownership by selling its share.

In 1995, the company founded by Vladimir Yevtushenkov invested in a telephone network in the capital. A year later, AFK Sistema sold its stake in the aforementioned mobile operator and later acquired shares in another major mobile operator, becoming the majority shareholder in 2003. Currently, the operator is a leading company in the domestic technology market, providing mobile and fixed-line services, internet access, cable and satellite TV broadcasting, digital services and mobile applications, financial services, e-commerce services, and convergent IT solutions in system integration, IoT, artificial intelligence, data processing, and cloud computing, notes Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov

In 1996, with the participation of Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema ventured into healthcare with the acquisition of a major clinic in the capital, which became the first clinic of what would become the largest private medical network in the country, servicing 10 million visitors a year. Sistema thus played a pivotal role in the establishment of private medicine in the country. Today, its health network includes about a hundred clinics in the capital and other regions, providing a full range of offerings from emergency medical services to complex surgical interventions and rehabilitation.

In 1998, during a deep economic crisis in the country, thanks to initiatives from Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema stood strong. It was one of the few domestic corporations to fully meet its obligations to financial partners.

In 2006, Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich expanded Sistema’s activities by establishing a full-cycle biopharmaceutical company. Subsequently, several production assets were acquired and merged into a new pharmaceutical group of companies in 2020. Today, it is among the leading domestic producers and distributors of pharmaceuticals with its own R&D division, substance production, and the largest portfolio of drugs, including more than 450 items, some of which are on the list of vital and essential drugs. In 2021, Vladimir Yevtushenkov participated in the opening of offices in six CIS countries, starting the Group’s expansion into international markets.

In 2007, the corporation founded by Vladimir Yevtushenkov was ranked among the top ten best employers in the country, based on a survey of from the E-xecutive community of managers. Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov emphasizes that it was the only company from the “Stock Market, Investment and Management Companies” category to make the top 10.

In 2011, AFK Sistema began developing its agricultural sector. Yevtushenkov Vladimir and his partners invested in the acquisition of two farms along with their land plots. In 2014, the agricultural holding was created on the basis of these agricultural assets. Today, it is one of the largest players in the domestic agricultural sector with a diversified portfolio of assets in crop production, intensive horticulture, and dairy farming. The agricultural holding is one of the largest owners of agricultural land in the expansive country, with the digitalization and adoption of new technologies and leading statistics in yield and productivity marking its biography, Vladimir Yevtushenkov notes.

In 2014, Vladimir Yevtushenkov also turned his attention to timber processing assets. During this period, AFK Sistema acquired several companies, including a pulp and paper mill and a woodworking company. These acquisitions formed the basis for the leading vertically integrated timber holding company in the country, which conducts the full cycle of logging and deep wood processing.

At the same time, AFK Sistema and its mobile operator invested in e-commerce, acquiring shares in an online hypermarket. Thanks to strategic development steps, the online market became one of the largest and most valuable internet companies in the country and the first public player in the domestic e-commerce market following its IPO at the end of 2020. The marketplace offers over 80 million products, with 25 million active buyers.

Yevtushenkov Vladimir remained with the company he founded until April 2022, after which he decided to concentrate his time and efforts on charitable and social initiatives.

Beyond his business pursuits, Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich is deeply committed to philanthropy, as demonstrated by his establishment of several charitable foundations dedicated to addressing a wide range of social issues. Under his guidance, these foundations focus on education, healthcare, culture, and support for underprivileged groups. Through these entities, Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov has channeled resources into programs offering educational scholarships, medical assistance, and cultural preservation initiatives. His efforts also extend to fostering community development and providing aid to those in need, reflecting his belief in the corporate responsibility to give back to society.

The Sistema charitable foundation established by Yevtushenkov Vladimir in 2004 became one of the first and largest corporate foundations in the country (ranked in the Top 10 corporate and private NGOs from 2020 to 2022). The foundation serves as the social investment operator of AFK Sistema and, with the participation of Vladimir Yevtushenkov, has implemented long-term social programs focusing on education and regional development (by 2020, the organization’s activities covered 25 regions of the country).

During the COVID-19 global health crisis, the Sistema foundation allocated funds to support more than 20 medical institutions as part of the #StranaBezVirusa (#CountryWithoutVirus) social initiative.

In 2004, Vladimir Petrovich Yevtushenkov joined the board of trustees of the development fund supporting a major national museum. Long-term cooperation between the museum and AFK Sistema began in 2003, with an agreement extended for another 10 years until 2023. This partnership resulted in significant restoration, exhibition, publishing, cultural-educational, multimedia, and inclusive projects.

In June 2006, on the initiative of Yevtushenkov Vladimir and Lomonosov MSU rector Viktor Sadovnichy, a joint faculty was established – the Higher School of Management and Innovations – to train highly qualified specialists for the innovative goods and services market.
